Deborah Richardson,
Chief Executive Officer of the Atlanta Women's Foundation (AWF), spoke about AWF's history and philosophy behind their philanthropic giving at the Association of Fundraising Professionals breakfast meeting today. Founded over 25 years ago, AWF is a public foundation that raises both funds and public awareness around important issues as they relate to women and girls in metro Atlanta. Each year, AWF distributes approximately $800,000 to $1 million in grants.
Strategic Grantmaking
– Through the generosity of many donors, the Atlanta Women's Foundation is able to support many organizations that promote self-sufficiency among women.
Leadership Programs
– Women are given the opportunity to receive training to serve on nonprofit boards, thus increasing their voice within the community at large. The Foundation also provides opportunities for young women to learn about the history and the impact of the Atlanta Women's Foundation and developing nonprofit board leadership possibilities.
Public Advocacy
– The Foundation funds lobbying efforts and raises awareness on key female issues. Through public advocacy, numerous women's foundations have developed much like the Atlanta Women's Foundation. Deborah noted that the U.S. is home to more than 90 women's funds.
